Central Oregon is a little over three hours from Portland on the east side of the Cascade Mountains. With 300 days of sunshine, it’s no wonder why this outdoor adventure mecca has jumped so high on people’s “must-travel” lists. It’s hard to beat a getaway that includes plenty of hiking and biking, floating the Deschutes, and live music that will leave you buzzing for weeks. Did we mention over two dozen craft breweries like Deschutes, Crux, Boneyard, and Wild Ride?
One of the best ways to explore Central Oregon is the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. Cutting through 66 miles of unique volcanic formations and geological beauty. It’s more than just a road, it’s an experience. The byway can take you to magical places like Sparks Lake, where a short hike delivers unbelievable mountain views. Bring a camera along with a canoe, kayak, SUP, road bike, mountain bike, fishing gear, hiking shoes, or any other piece of outdoor equipment you can fit in your car.
If you’re into chasing waterfalls, Tumalo Falls is a great place start. With a drop of 97 feet, Tumalo Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Central Oregon, but don’t forget the rest! Paulina Falls, Benham Falls, Dillon Falls, Fall River Falls, Steelhead Falls, and White River Falls are all easily accessible.
No trip to Central Oregon is complete without a visit to Smith Rock State Park. Soaring at 3,000 feet, the views from the top are dreamlike, and the park has a total of seven miles of hiking trails and climber access routes. If you enjoy scenic views of deep river canyons or rock climbing, Smith Rock State Park is the place for you. Along your trip through the canyon, you might see golden eagles, prairie falcons, mule deer, river otters, and beavers.
