Joining the likes of classic films Bonnie and Clyde and Thelma & Louise, Queen & Slim takes on a consciousness-focused love story that “confronts the staggering human toll of racism and life-shattering price of violence.” Written by Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe (of Netflix’s Master of None fame) and Melina Matsoukas, who has directed a plethora of pop culture-focused projects such as Beyoncé’s "Formation" music video and Nike’s “Equality” campaign, the new film takes on an original script by author James Frey.
Starring Daniel Kaluuya, the film revolves around the dynamic between a man (Kaluuya) and woman (Jodie Turner-Smith). “While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio,” the two are “pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defense. Terrified and in fear for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman, a criminal defense lawyer, are forced to go on the run. But the incident is captured on video and goes viral, and the couple unwittingly becomes a symbol of trauma, terror, grief, and pain for people across the country.” As the film unfolds, the two “will forge a deep and powerful love that will reveal their shared humanity and shape the rest of their lives.”
The film is set to be the feature-film directorial debut for Melina Matsoukas. Both Matsoukas and Waithe will produce the film, which will be further distributed by Universal Pictures. It will hit theaters on November 27.
