After her appearance at Trooping the Colour last month, royal fans noticed that Meghan Markle changed her engagement ring. The Duchess of Sussex updated the plain gold band to include diamonds and made it a little thinner, and according to experts it has sparked this huge ring trend.
Meghan’s engagement ring features one cushion cut diamond and two diamonds from Princess Diana’s jewellery collection, and considering she is one of the most famous women in the world it’s no wonder that people are turning to her for for ringspiration.
However, there is another trend emerging this year when it comes to engagement rings – coloured diamonds and gems.
Jason D’Heureux, the Creative Director of London-based jewellers Taylor & Hart, explained that ‘even the simplest design more bold and beautiful.’
He said: ‘While diamond engagement rings remain a popular and traditional choice, more and more customers are looking for unique ways to make even the simplest design more bold and beautiful.

‘Coloured gemstones including sapphires, rubies and emeralds, known for their iconic and vibrant shade, offer a wide spectrum of colours to express your creativity in a unique and personal fashion.’
Celebrity engagement rings no doubt have an impact on the trend, from Scarlett Johansson’s 11-carat pear-shaped brown diamond to Katy Perry’s ruby and diamond ring. The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s engagement ring is also a colourful number, a 12-carat oval blue sapphire surrounded by fourteen solitaire diamonds.
Jason continued: ‘From Kate Middleton’s heirloom sapphire engagement ring to Katy Perry’s vintage-inspired ruby and diamond cluster, we’re seeing royals and pop stars alike embrace coloured engagement rings.’
