Those who have watched Stranger Things 3 will probably have a ton of questions about the show, including theories about the characters in the latest season. Apart from the cast, we can’t help but notice the huge, new location where a large portion of the season takes place: Starcourt Mall.
As seen on the show, this ’80s shopping mall has all kinds of shops ranging from The Gap, J.C. Penney, Claire’s and Jazzercise studio to a Burger King and Hotdog on a Stick. With Hawkins being a fictional town, Netflix has filmed all seasons of Stranger Things in various locations in Georgia. Gwinnett Place Mall, a real shopping center located in Duluth, was chosen to undergo a retro-style renovation to be filmed for the third season as reported by local Atlanta blog Tomorrow’s News Today.
This center opened its doors in 1984, just the time period the show is set in, and according the Atlanta Journal-Constitution a former employee of the mall shared that the location was at its peak during the ’80s, with not enough parking spots to contain all of the people who visited. However, in recent years the mall became ghosted, with a dead body discovered at the unused food court in 2017. After the premiere of the show fans around the area have been sharing on social media photos and videos from their visit to this spot.
While the mall is still standing, the site may be sold and transformed into a cricket stadium to fit 20,000 people, so if you’re in the area make sure to stop by for an Instagram-worthy moment.
