Russia’s Top Restaurant Will Pop Up for Two Nights at Vespertine in September

Vespertine, already one of LA’s most rarefied dining experiences and the proud holder of a two Michelin-star rating, will soon host two exceptional evenings of cooking from Moscow’s White Rabbit, which is currently number 13 on the World’s Fifty Best restaurant list.

On September 17 and 18, White Rabbit chef Vladimir Mukhin will be cooking in the United States for the first time ever with a special collaboration dinner with Vespertine chef Jordan Kahn. Mukhin serves modern Russian cuisine in a sleek glass dome on the 16th floor of a high-end Moscow building. A typical tasting menu at White Rabbit costs 10,000 rubles, or about $151 U.S. dollars, and includes signature dishes like a baked cabbage topped with caviar to a sea urchin with tangerine in a baked potato. White Rabbit first opened in 2012 and earned an episode in Netflix’s popular series Chef’s Table.

Here in Culver City’s Vespertine building, Mukhin and Kahn will serve a $375 tasting menu. That price does not include beverage pairings, tax, and gratuity, which means the addition of the highest $200 beverage pairing, $30 post-dinner snacks (a traditional denouement of the dinner at Vespertine), 20% service charge, and 10.25% tax will mean a dinner for two will run approximately $1,600. But hey, this does save you the trip from LA to Moscow.

With LA’s new Michelin presence and the rise of ambitious tasting menu restaurants like Vespertine, Somni, Auburn, and Maude, Los Angeles is slowly becoming a figure in the global culinary scene. LA might not have the fine dining scenes of the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and New York City, but dinners like this collaboration with White Rabbit and Vespertine will only serve notice to the dining elite that the City of Angels can compete with the top American cities.
