The 18-month-old eatery faced rising overhead costs
Nyesha Arrington will close her Santa Monica restaurant Native on Sunday night. That’s per the LA Times, who confirmed the shutter with the chef just yesterday.
Arrington told the Times that was sad to see the restaurant go, noting that she felt like it had really started to find its stride since opening in 2017. However, the 18-month-old restaurant simply couldn’t keep up with the staggering overhead costs, Arrington noted, including rising minimum wage and high rents in the city of Santa Monica.
The final evening of service for Native will be Sunday night. It’s unclear where Arrington will end up next, though she did hint at the possibility of bringing the restaurant back in a new location sometime down the line.
Arrington’s restaurant is just the latest high-profile closure to hit Los Angeles, even as the city continues to draw worldwide attention for its food scene. Top Chef’s Marcel Vigneron recently shuttered two restaurants along Melrose; Josef Centeno has sold off his restaurant PYT in Downtown, not far from the soon-to-close B.S. Taqueria; and April Bloomfield did away with the Hearth & Hound in Hollywood, all within the past few months alone. The final night of service at Native is this weekend.
