After a few years of silence on the new music front, Night Lovell is finally planning to drop a full-length follow-up to 2016’s Red Teenage Melody. Titled Goodnight Lovell, the 21-year-old artist’s next LP is billed as a more personal project, and features collaborations with Wifisfuneral, $UICIDEBOY$, 88Glam, Lil West and Lil Gnar. To support the effort, Night Lovell has released one of its opening cuts, "Bad Kid," as Goodnight Lovell‘s lead single; further promoting the project and "Bad Kid," he’s back with the aforementioned record’s official video.
"I haven’t dropped music in a relatively long time, so for this album, I wanted to take my time and let the fans see a more personal side," Lovell tells us, breaking down Goodnight Lovell. "My first two albums were letting them know what was on the outside of me, but this one is kind of more personal and they’re [the fans] are let in more on what’s in my head … They’re getting a more grown Lovell."
According to Lovell, his next album is a more mature release as well. "This one is more of a solid project — I feel like I’ve grown," Lovell says. "My first albums — I was younger and I was a kid who didn’t really know what was going on, I was just riding a wave. With me growing up and going through shit, this kind of formulated my sound and how I talk about stuff … I’m not afraid to talk about more personal things. I’m more open to that … What goes on in my head when I’m alone; why I don’t go out; why I don’t talk to people; why I’m not seen as much on the internet — I just tell them all of that stuff, and they’re going to get to know me better from this album. Generally, I’m a relatively introverted person."
The sound of Goodnight Lovell and Night Lovell’s music is also influenced by his favorite time to create: the night. "I feel like that’s a very vulnerable state," Lovell explains. "I just feel safer in the nighttime because I’m a more introverted person — you don’t see certain flaws and shit. I feel safer to express myself at night. That goes with the whole name of the album, my name and everything else."
As far as the narrative of Goodnight Lovell is concerned, its creator says that each track is "essentially a dream." "I really tried to portray a dream in every song," he shares. "You listen to it and you see something; I wanted to create a movie with words."
