A luxury condo development in metropolitan Vancouver, Canada, hopes to draw younger buyers by offering the latest millennial-inspired incentive: free avocado toast for a year.
The Kira is a 116-unit condominium that will open this year with amenities including on-site rooms reserved for meditation and landscaped courtyards on the roof. But its most unusual offering is avocado toast — or a comparable breakfast snack — from a local restaurant for a year, free of charge, the New York Post.
Prices start at $297,225 for a one-bedroom unit at The Kira and range as high as $483,023 for a three-bedroom. Buyers are also only required to pay 10 percent down.
The decision to offer avocado toast as an incentive may have been a nod to a “60 Minutes” interview in 2017 with Australian millionaire Tim Gurner, who said millennials pay so much for avocado toast they cannot afford to buy a home.
Gurner said when he was trying to buy a home for the first time, “I wasn’t buying smashed avocados for $19 and four coffees at $4 each.”
Prices vary, of course, but avoiding avocado toast and saving even $19 a day for a year would build approximately $7,000 of savings – far short of the minimum down payment of nearly $30,000 to buy a unit at The Kira. [NYP] – Mike Seemuth
