Yes, reallyThis week, one of Meghan Markle’s pals popped over to her house for a spot of brunch. Daniel Martin, Meghan’s former hairdresser, was visiting the Duchess of Sussex and uploaded a photo of their catch up on Instagram, sharing a picture of some avo toast, truffles and tea. He also playfully gave her the most millennial nickname ever (the ‘avocado whisperer’).
However, their innocent lunch has been turned into some rather outrageous accusations.
British newspaper The Daily Mail ran a story titled: ‘How Meghan’s favourite avocado snack – beloved of all millennials – is fuelling human rights abuses, drought and murder.’
A snippet of the piece reads: ‘The campaigning duchess may be passionate when it comes to racial equality and female empowerment, but for someone who wants to save the planet, she’s committed something of a faux pas with avocados.’
Erm. Really?
The story highlights some valid reasons about the avocado trade and the increased demand for the fruit, however is Meghan’s predilection for avo toast solely responsible? Of course not.
Twitter erupted, naturally, calling out the newspaper for their article.
‘That avocado toast pic really triggered some people huh,’ one person wrote.
‘Meghan Markle’s avocado on toast ‘fuelling drought and murder’? Another example of how the media shamelessly uses royals,’ another added.
A third said: ‘The amount of heat Meghan gets is too much. Also guarantee someone in their office is having avocado on toast at brunch this weekend.’
The Duchess has been subjected to an onslaught of negative press over the last few months, and is reportedly frustrated that she is unable to stand up for herself.
A royal insider told Us Weekly: ‘She’s always relied on her own voice to stand up for others, and for herself. So not being able to say anything is a debilitating feeling.
‘She’s always been so independent, her entire life, and that’s all been taken away from her. She’s always been able to clap back on social media and now she can’t.’
However, considering that she’s excitedly expecting her first child in the Spring, we doubt she’s got time to read such ridiculous headlines.
