Lil Nas X‘s "Old Town Road" has garnered hardcore fans of all ages following its record-breaking 19-week run on Billboard Hot 100, due in no small part to its genre-bending sound and inescapable hooks. Early this year, however, the song was kicked off of the country music charts for not embracing “enough elements of today’s country music,” even after Billy Ray Cyrus filtered the track through the lens of his classic country persona.
Despite the controversial rejection from the country music charts, "Old Town Road" prevails with a nomination in this year’s Country Music Awards (CMA). The song is nominated for "Musical Event of the Year" and will be going up against songs from genre heavyweights like Brooks & Dunn, Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton. This marks be the second time "Old Town Road" has received a nod from the CMA, following a surprise performance by Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Keith Urban at CMA Fest earlier this summer.
The winners will be revealed at the 53rd annual CMA Awards, to be held November 13 in Nashville. In case you haven’t had your daily dose of "Old Town Road", relive Lil Nas and Billy Ray’s performance at June’s BET awards below.
