The phrase originated with Texas rapper Megan Thee Stallion—whose track “Cash Shit” includes a reference to “real hot girl shit”—before becoming a social media meme and, as of today, a summertime anthem featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. 

Despite the concept’s ubiquity, some people are probably still aren’t quite clear on what a “hot girl summer” is. Let us help.

Who is this Megan Thee Stallion?

An on-the-rise rapper from Houston, Megan has created a personal brand of hotness by calling herself the “H-Town Hottie” or “Hot Girl Meg,” and referring to her fans as “hotties.” The cover art for Fever, her debut album that dropped in May, was captioned with “She’s thee HOT GIRL.” Soon, Megan’s hot girl lifestyle, recognizable by expert twerking videos and having shots poured into her mouth (aka ”driving the boat”), inspired fans to start having hot girl summers of their own. 

Although Megan didn’t coin the phrase, she has unequivocally become the face and voice of hot girl summer. She’s even attempting to trademark the phrase after companies, including Forever 21 and Wendy’s, marketed their products as hot girl approved.

Hot girl summer is not just a meme—it’s a mindset. Having the attitude and confidence to do whatever pleases you and release your inner bad bitch, regardless of other’s criticism, is the essence of the hot girl summer lifestyle. This past June, Megan told the Root, “It’s just basically about women—and men—just being unapologetically them, just having a good-ass time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody got to say about it.” Contrary to the gendered nature of the phrase, anyone who chooses to ignore the haters and live their best life in a positive way can have a hot girl summer.
