California senator and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris got some extremely good news last week. According to a Quinnipiac University survey of California Democratic voters, the former San Francisco District Attorney has pulled out ahead of frontrunner Joe Biden by two percentage points, with 23 percent support to the former Vice President’s 21.
Of course, this was before Harris attended a fundraiser on Saturday at the Brentwood home of Scooter Braun, manager to the stars and public enemy number one amongst one of entertainment’s most fearsome fanbases: the Swifties.
Braun recently bought Big Machine Records, the label on which Taylor Swift released her first six albums. When Braun made the purchase, Swift’s master recordings were rolled into the deal. Swift was extremely displeased about this, and took to Tumblr to explain why she felt this was tantamount to theft. (Feel free to read our convenient primer to the drama here.)
A truly inspiring night with my friend @KamalaHarris

Since then, Swift fans have had their eye on Braun, so when he tweeted about his “truly inspiring” night with his “friend” Candidate Kamala, Twitter had things to say.
Does @ewarren or @KamalaHarris have a plan to get those garbage can men of manipulation to return the masters to @taylorswift13? If so, that’s who I’m canvassing for. #WeStandWithTaylor

Thief and the cop, what a perfect combo

Female pop stars who are not Taylor Swift were well represented at Braun’s fundraiser. Harris posted a photo to Instagram of herself alongside Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, and Demi Lovato. One user commented, “This is confusing. Advocating for strong woman at a Scooter Braun event? I really like you but this is giving me second thoughts.”
It remains to be seen whether pop music drama can influence poll numbers—but at this point would anyone be surprised?
