Legendary British photographer Ewen Spencer has unveiled a new book in collaboration with Gabber Eleganza, a project by Berlin-based DJ Alberto Guerrini. Announcing the book, Gabber Eleganza described it as "a tool for reading today through the analysis of existing aesthetic and social-cultural realities, stripped of all rhetoric or nostalgia and revitalized through their fusion."
Hardcore Soul is set to comprise of two different books, the first of which will be an 80-page collection of photographs by Ewen Spencer. The second part is a 16-page conversation between Spencer and Leckey, looking at the different subcultures they both take inspiration from. I‘m very happy to announce the launch of a new project: Hardcore Soul Book (and mixtape). A special collaboration between me and the uk photographer @ewenspencer with the precious contribution by @mark.leckey. I spent the last 5 months working on this Book and the result is stunning! (Pre-Order now – Link in bio / new website!) I‘m going to present all the ppl involved in this fantastic journey in the Next days! „ The book is a powerful example of our days, of how time has taken on an increasingly less linear dimension, fully expressing the sense of contemporaneity – now more than ever marked by the mingling and fusion of diferent environments and cultures of coexistence and synchronicity of experiences as diferent eras but at the same time common and intertwined. The publication, by Alberto Guerrini aka Gabber Eleganza and Ewen Spencer creates a seamless fow between what was the Happy Hardcore Rave scene and that of the British weekenders, young fans of the Northern Soul. In Hardcore Soul – which also makes use of the contributions of the Turner Prize Mark Leckey – through the circular and incessant fow of images, the diferences between the two worlds disappear, bringing out similarities and relationships: the total dedication to a musical genre, the discovery of the sense of community and the need for aggregation, aesthetic research as an individual and collective defnition, sweat and muscularity in the act of dance, strength and youthful enthusiasm, drugs and adrenaline. To accentuate the sense of immersion in the folds of this unpublished story, the images distributed in the book are deliberately organized in a non-chronological order, reinforcing the feeling that everything is happening at the same time and in the same place, immersing the reader in a sort of crazy and energetic mantra and canceling every clear historical reference, every distinction between the two realities, in favor of a special and unexpected synthesis. Making you want to turn up the volume and dance, whatever age you are, wherever you come from. „ @davide_giannella Release date May 16th. Published by @neversleep_neversleep
