Edward Norton demonstrates impressive chops with his upcoming crime drama film Motherless Brooklyn, his first time behind the camera in about 20 years. Written, directed by and starring Norton himself, the 1950s period piece is based on Jonathan Lethem’s novel, focusing on an upstart private eye with Tourettes (Norton) looking into a criminal case that got his mentor (played by Bruce Willis) killed.
The likely-Oscar-contender is set to not only show-off Norton’s acting and directing skills, but it will also showcase a wide array of A-list stars and dependable talents, including Willis, Willem Dafoe, Alec Baldwin, Leslie Mann and Bobby Cannavale. Expect the atmosphere to play a huge role in the film, with its score featuring, amongst other things, a new song from Thom Yorke and Flea.
Motherless Brooklyn‘s official synopsis describes Norton’s Lionel Essrog as "lonely," explaining that he "ventures to solve the murder of his mentor … armed only with a few clues and the engine of his obsessive mind. In a mystery that carries him from gin-soaked jazz clubs in Harlem to the hard-edged slums of Brooklyn and, finally, into the gilded halls of New York’s power brokers, Lionel contends with thugs, corruption and the most dangerous man in the city to honor his friend and save the woman who might be his own salvation."
Motherless Brooklyn arrives in theaters November 1.
