The design-forward chocolate shop opens on La Brea just south of Melrose
LA’s popular 70-year-old chocolatier Compartès is moving out of its Brentwood headquarters and into a massive 6,000 square foot space on La Brea just south of Melrose. The new space will open this summer with a new and big name, Compartès Global HQ & Chocolate Factory.
CEO Jonathan Grahm is the creative mind behind Compartès. His signature truffles and bonbons are some of the city’s best, but Grahm’s mosaic-like chocolate bars are incredibly popular with up to 200 unusual combinations like rose and chocolate, donuts and coffee, or avocado bar, which usually sells out within weeks.
With five times more room to function in, Grahm will considerably increase his chocolate production and offer tours, special events, host private chocolate parties, and tastings. The factory is channeling Willy Wonka with custom stainless steel chocolate equipment, imported Italian marble and brass, and 12-foot high brass doors leading to the new chocolate assembly area, which will be encased in glass walls to showcase the production line to the public.
LA’s chocolate makers keep expanding with Milla Chocolates moving from pop-up to brick-and-mortar last August, along with small-batch chocolate store LetterPress Chocolate last fall. In 2017, Grahm opened a retail location in Westfield Century City, and maintains seven retail stores in Japan. Grahm started working in the family’s chocolate business at age 15, and eventually rebuilt it into its present, modern form.
