After a lackluster first two months of the year, March helped lead the 2019 box office in a positive direction.
The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, "Captain Marvel," made $354 million and Jordan Peele’s "Get Out" follow-up, "Us," made $127.8 million in March, according to data provided to Business Insider by IMDbPro and Box Office Mojo.
“All told, March helped turn the tables on what was a slower start to 2019, outperforming grosses in 2018 and delivering the second-largest March of all-time, driven by the highest-grossing domestic release of the year so far, ‘Captain Marvel’ ($354 million domestic gross in its first 24 days of release), and ‘Us’ (which delivered the second-largest opening of all-time for a live-action, original feature)," Box Office Mojo editor Brad Brevet said in a statement.
The largest March at the box office of all time was in 2017 with $1.2 billion, when movies like Disney’s live-action "Beauty and the Beast" remake, the "X-Men" spin-off "Logan," and "Kong: Skull Island" hit theaters.
The domestic box office in 2018 was the biggest of all time with nearly $12 billion, thanks to "Avengers: Infinity War," "Black Panther," "Incredibles 2," and more.
"April is likely to also help narrow the divide between this year and last year with highly anticipated titles such as ‘Hellboy,’ ‘Shazam!,’ and ‘Pet Sematary’ as well as ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which could once again deliver a record-breaking opening for Marvel," Brevet added.
"Green Book" was the 10th biggest money-maker in March, with $13.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo (it’s made $34 million domestically, total). While the movie opened in a limited release last year and received a wide release in January, it got a big boost from February’s Oscars, when it won the award for best picture.
