Britney Spears’ conservatorship saga continues. On Friday, the pop singer appeared in a Los Angeles court, alongside her mother, to speak on her decade-long conservatorship.
According to TMZ, Spears told the the judge that her father entered her into a mental health facility in January without her consent. This is what the podcast Britney’s Gram reported months ago and part of what spurred the #FreeBritney movement.
To show their support for Spears’ courthouse appearance on Friday, about 40 fans of Spears wore all black and stood in silence outside the courthouse in support of their favorite pop star. Junior Olivas was one of them.
Nobody knows for sure what Spears is feeling, but fans believe she doesn’t want to be under the conservatorship.
“On Instagram, before all of this started—the rumors and stuff—Britney’s mother liked my comment where I said, ‘Give Britney back her freedom, her voice and her life,’” Olivas says. “I thought, OK, so she agrees with me. Something’s definitely going on that shouldn’t be going on. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and that right there gave me the boost.”
The judge ordered a a 730 expert evaluation, “a competence examination usually issued for children in divorce cases,” according to AP. It’s unknown when a decision in regards to her conservatorship will be made.
“I want Britney to be able to make her own decisions,” Olivas says. “I don’t want her to be a show pony. I don’t want other people making decisions for her and pushing her out to work and make them millions of dollars. If Britney Spears doesn’t want to do that, then Britney Spears shouldn’t have to do that.”
Olivas says he and fans believe Spears doesn’t look as happy as she used to be. He says while fellow celebrities, like Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen, and Demi Lovato overdosed on drugs, they weren’t put into a strict conservatorship like Spears.
“I believe if Britney Spears wasn’t a multi-millionaire, there wouldn’t even be a conservatorship. I feel like they’re using this woman for her money. … I just wish for her freedom.”
