It’s been just over two years (!) since our Instagram feeds became flooded with imagery of bikini-clad Instababes like Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Baldwin in the Bahamas promoting a mysterious “luxury” music festival that ultimately descended into a very different chaotic scene with guests arriving to find little-to-no food, lodging, models or even music.
So, what the hell happened, and to what extent is Ja Rule to blame? “Fyre,” an upcoming Netflix documentary on “the greatest party that never happened,” promises to answer that, and the first official trailer is out now. There appears to be plenty of footage of Ja Rule’s business partner Billy McFarland, who was sentenced to six years in prison for fraud late last fall; there’s mention of them purchasing the island that once belonged to Pablo Escobar; scenes of workers scrambling to get the festival ready in time (and clearly failing) and looting attendees; shots of all the models who heavily promoted the festival on social media; and dramatic one-liners like, “Desperate people do desperate things.” That viral photo of the very sad “sandwich” is also prominently featured, thankfully.
If you’re wondering whether the documentary will show much more than what we all saw go down on social media and in various written accounts of this unmitigated disaster (which was quite a bit), it sounds like it will. According to Entertainment Weekly, director Chris Smith had so much footage and interviews he almost made it into a full docu-series, but ultimately decided the film was stronger. Watch the trailer below. The film goes live on Jan. 18.
