Awards season kicked off in a thoroughly British fashion with LA’s first big bash of the year, the annual BAFTA Tea Party, held at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. The weather even got in on the act, with Tinseltown’s trademark sun replaced by gloomy storm clouds and a rare spot of rain, which meant everyone rushed through the red carpet as quickly as possible to warm up inside with a cup of Earl Grey. It was a star-studded afternoon, with Golden Globes nominees including Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Claire Foy (who showed up with her sister, Gemma, as her date) and Emily Blunt all coming to catch up after the holidays over cucumber sandwiches and scones. But everyone was most excited to see the arrival of the much-lauded trio from The Favourite, Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz, who walked the red carpet holding hands. Emma Stone said filming together was like ‘getting to hang out with your good pals every day’, and Rachel Weisz said that as a Brit, she was always happy to make it to the Tea Party because ‘BAFTA are my peeps’. Fellow Brit Rosamund Pike chatted about the beautiful bunch of flowers she’d just received from Lady Gaga (turns out Gaga sent them to all her fellow Best Actress nominees) and Lily Collins praised the Tea Party for bringing a ‘chic British vibe to LA.’ Inside, everyone was relieved to find there was a strict ‘no selfies’ rule and piled their plates with cake without having camera phones waved in their faces – the chocolate éclairs were declared the hands-down winners of the spread. Then it was off to get their beauty sleep before the Golden Globes the following night – but not before making of with a few of the BAFTA-logoed biscuits for the journey home.
