White House welcomes Clemson for mid-shutdown celebration

The national champion Clemson Tigers football team will visit the White House on Monday, President Donald Trump announced in a tweet Friday. It will be the second trip to the Trump White House for Clemson, which beat Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship. The optics of a White House celebration during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history did not sit well with some observers nationally. Even some fans and graduates of Clemson University disagreed with the timing of the trip, which came together faster than visits from previous college football champions during the Trump administration.

Detroit auto show opens: Cadillac, Toyota, Ford to show new vehicles

The 2019 Detroit auto show opens Monday with news conferences to announce new vehicles. Eye-popping automobiles making their debut this year include the Cadillac Escalade’s ‘little brother’ and Cadillac’s first electric vehicle along with new vehicles from Toyota and Ford. The show will reinvent itself in 2020, shifting to June in hopes of continuing to attract the kind of flashy vehicles and newsmaking events that make it one of southeast Michigan’s signature events. But first, organizers worry about the water: A water main break late Saturday night forced a boil water advisory for downtown Detroit, leaving hotels telling thousands of visitors not to drink water from the tap.
