Thirty years ago, in the last teachers’ strike in the Los Angeles Unified School District, Mark Drucker was alone on the picket line at Taft High. But Monday morning, Drucker, now the school’s athletic director, was joined in the rain by his wife, Stacy, and daughter, Brittany, both math teachers at Taft.
“We tried to get Brittany to not go into the teaching profession but obviously seeing what her mom and dad do, she liked the advantages,” he said, standing near the Ralphs parking lot across the street from campus where teachers organized before beginning their picketing duties.
It was a festive, enthusiastic group of teachers on the picket line. One was ringing a bell. Many had ponchos handed out by United Teachers Los Angeles organizers. Umbrellas were everywhere. Passing drivers along Winnetka Avenue and Ventura Boulevard were honking horns in a message of support.
