Blog: Police release body camera footage of officer-involved shooting from November in Harbor Gateway – The Daily Breeze

The Los Angeles Police Department this week released video of an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Harbor Gateway, Nov. 11.

Two suspects were injured in the shooting and were expected to survive their injuries. One was taken into custody Nov. 11 and the other was arrested one week later at a hospital, police said.

Just before 10:30 p.m., Nov. 11, LAPD Harbor Division officers on patrol were travelling south on Halldale Avenue when they heard gunshots in the area of the Normandale Recreation Center, Lt. Kevin Brawner said in the critical incident briefing, posted Wednesday, Dec. 26.

The officers pulled into the parking lot of the recreation center and saw two suspects emerge from behind a building. The suspects ran toward the officers while firing at them, Brawner said.

The officer in the passenger seat exited the vehicle and returned fire, striking one suspect twice and the second suspect once. The first suspect, identified as 18-year-old Jose Vargas, was seen in body-worn camera footage falling to the ground as a result of the shooting.

He was taken into custody at the scene and was treated for gunshot wounds to his right side and right hip, Brawner said.

The second suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was hit once in the upper back and fled the scene. He was located days later at a hospital and arrested Nov. 18, police said.

A handgun was found at the scene next to Vargas.
