After graduating from the University of Florida in 1977, Emmrich worked as a reporter at the Atlanta Constitution for two years before moving to New York. He held a series of newspaper and magazine jobs there and in London over the next two decades, including two stints working with Pearlstine – at SmartMoney magazine, where he served as Executive Editor, and then at Time magazine, where he was a senior editor.
