The Los Angeles Rams are one of the four teams still alive in the 2019 NFL Postseason. But if things don’t work out on Sunday, Rams fans might not have to wait long for another shot at the Lombardi Trophy.
Sports betting site SuperBookUSA released the (very) early odds for which NFL team would win Super Bowl LIV in 2020, and the Rams were the frontrunners with 6-1 odds.
Los Angeles was followed by the other three teams still alive in the Conference Championship Round in the Chiefs (7-1), Saints (8-1) and Patriots (10-1). Of the 18 potential winners listed, the Seahawks, Falcons, Texans, Jaguars and Browns were all tied for last place with 30-1 odds.
It’s not hard to see why the Rams are favorite to win a championship a year from now. The team isn’t losing any of its offensive stars to free agency (Ndamukong Suh, LaMarcus Joyner and Dante Fowler are all hitting free agency on the defensive side), Sean McVay has continued to grow more comfortable in his second season as an NFL head coach and stars like Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley and Jared Goff show no signs of slowing down.
But before all of that, the Rams still have an enormous challenge on their hands on Sunday when they face the New Orleans on the road in the NFC Championship game. The Saints have never lost under Sean Payton and Drew Brees in the playoffs at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and already beat the Rams once back in November.
“I think it’s going to be a great challenge,” McVay said in a press conference on Sunday. “Obviously, the Saints are a great football team. I think they’re playing really well on all three phases right now. You know how explosive their offense is and then I think their defense is really hitting their stride. (Defensive coordinator) Dennis Allen has done an outstanding job with these guys. They play fast, they all play together, they’re really sound. They mix in pressures. It’s going to be a great challenge, especially just having to deal with that atmosphere and that environment with those fans going crazy. But, we’re certainly excited about another opportunity to go back there and see if we can come away with a win.”
McVay was also asked about his excitement from being one game away from Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta.
“It’s certainly exciting. It’s a great opportunity for us,” McVay said. “I think it’s something that when you get a chance to play for one game away, that’s exactly why you do all this hard work. To be able to see the people that you love and care about so much — having that success and sharing that with them is what’s special about it. So, it’s going to take a great week of preparation from us. We know how good of a team the Saints are and we have a lot of respect for them. But, we’re going to go there and give it our best shot and compete to the best of our ability and see what happens.”
