Los Angeles County’s employment winning streak grew to 90 months as local bosses added 60,400 workers in the 12 months ended in November as unemployment fell in a month to 4.6 percent.
Here are nine Los Angeles County job market trends for from the state Employment Development Dept.’s monthly report: November (seasonally unadjusted) data compared to a year ago and the average of the previous five years …
1. Jobs: 4.57 million compared to 4.51 million a year ago — up 60,400 or 1.34 percent — vs. L.A.’s 4.27 million 5-year average. It’s the largest job count this century for any November.
2. Job growth: That 1.34 percent growth rate compared to 1.14 percent a year ago and 1.79 percent two years ago. Four-county Southern California growth in November? 1.32 percent.
3. Recovery: Los Angeles County has had year-over-year job growth for 90 consecutive months dating to June 2011. In this post-recession rebound, 625,300 jobs were created, or a 2.13 percent annualized hiring pace.
4. Unemployment rate: 4.6 percent compared to 4.7 percent the previous month; 4.3 percent a year ago; and a 7.0 percent 5-year average. And it’s the lowest jobless rate this century for any November.
5. Number of jobless: 240,000 compared to 221,200 a year ago — up 18,800 or 8.5 percent — vs. 351,760 over five years.
6. Goods-producing jobs: 496,500 compared to 490,800 a year ago — up 5,700 or 1.2 percent — vs. 493,930 over five years.
7. Service jobs: 4.07 million compared to 4.02 million a year ago — up 54,700 or 1.4 percent — vs. 3.78 million over five years. This is the biggest service staffing since 2000 for any November.
8. Government jobs: 593,400 compared to 595,900 a year ago — down 2,500 or 0.4 percent — vs. 566,973 over five years.
9. Comparable joblessness: For November, California’s rate was 3.9 percent; four-county Southern California, 4.1 percent; Orange County, 2.8 percent; Inland Empire, 3.9 percent; and nationally, 3.5 percent.
