The Los Angeles Chargers have 19 members of the 2018 roster scheduled to become free agents in one way, shape or form.
The Chargers were one step away from qualifying for their first trip to the conference championship game in over a decade, but the New England Patriots, the AFC’s wrecking ball for far too long, ended their season.
But after winning 12 games in the regular season and going on the road to win one in the playoffs, the Chargers will come into 2019 with third-year coach Anthony Lynn prepared to be considered a favorite to win it all.
Philip Rivers will still be the quarterback and he’ll be surrounded by solid offensive pieces such as Melvin Gordon, Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry. Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram aren’t going anywhere, so the building blocks of a championship team are in place.
But of course, the Super Bowl is not attained without a great deal of depth and in today’s NFL, turnover is commonplace. It’s a regularity for teams in today’s game to turn over half of their roster from one season to the next.
Of course, the trick is to find a way to keep the guys you want while working within the league-mandated salary cap. That is the challenge set at the feet of general manager Tom Telesco.
The free-agent market will not officially open until March, but between now and then, the team can start forecasting what to do with each of its free agents. Other teams around the league will have a chance to throw big money at the players they want as well, which is why it’s referred to as the free agent “frenzy”.
