Between 1999 and 2006, Kate Spade New York — the label launched by the effervescent designer Kate Spade and her husband Andy — tapped photographer Tim Walker to capture the brand’s free spirit in its ad campaigns, resulting in some pretty iconic imagery. Who could forget a pair of young women hitchhiking amidst piles of clothes, or handbags being thrown from a second story window?
That’s why, to celebrate her first collection for the brand, creative director Nicola Glass called upon Walker once again to create the quirky-yet-cool campaign imagery for Spring 2019.
“When I joined the brand in January 2018, I started by looking backwards before I looked forwards. There truly was so much opportunity to examine and refine the existing codes of the house and to create new ones,” Glass says over email. “I was particularly inspired by the early ad campaigns shot by Tim Walker, who shot for the brand from 1999-2006 under Kate and Andy Spade. I loved how he played with perspective and proportions. There was always something a little off that was witty and made you smile. The women in the campaigns conveyed a sense of individuality – they were optimistic, free-spirited and happy.”
Walker shot the three campaign stars — actresses Julia Garner, Sadie Sink and Kiki Layne, who will serve as the face of Kate Spade New York throughout 2019 — in his usual dreamy, slightly-otherworldy fashion. The women pose in front of wallpaper and on carpeting and upholstery which mimics the clothes themselves, but thanks to Walker’s keen eye, they never blend in. The styling by Sara Moonves also plays up the riots of color and pattern present in Glass’s first collection, a nod to the DNA of the brand.
“Kate Spade is a very unique brand — I have always been attracted to the brand’s core DNA — the modern use of color and sophistication of the thinking around the design. It’s the foundation I’ve been building on — the thread I’m pulling through,” says Glass. “One of the things I love about Kate Spade is that its DNA has been clear and distinct since the very beginning back in 1993.”
And fans of fashion photography, rejoice: Walker will shoot all Kate Spade New York campaigns in 2019. See the complete Kate Spade New York Spring 2019 campaign:
