As founder of the Road Theatre Company, Taylor Gilbert has been staging made-in-L.A. plays at NoHo’s Lankershim Arts Center for more than 25 years. Between readings and rehearsals, the artistic director spends her days patronizing the nabe’s vibrant array of restaurants, shops, and galleries (all within walking distance of her work). “It’s a small neighborhood, but you can accomplish almost anything you want in just a few blocks,” says Gilbert. Here’s how she recommends you spend a day in the Valley enclave.
Republic of Pie
10 a.m.

“They have terrific pies, obviously. But they also have breakfast during the week and brunch on the weekends. One of my favorites is the ROP Hash, and they have pretty good french toast.”

Noon
“A group of set designers and professionals from the film and television industry came together to establish it in the Lankershim Arts Center—they present their work three or four times a year and have these wonderful openings.”
Blastoff Comics
12:45 p.m.
“My son loves it because it has a lot of graphic novels—he goes whenever he visits me. It’s fun because it’s one of the few bookstores around. They’re all disappearing.”
Pho NoHo
1:30 p.m.
“It’s easy to pick up lunch here in a hurry. My favorite thing is the Pho Nam with the brisket, but there are tons of vegetarian options, too. I also love their chai tea.”
Kathy’s E Boutique
3 p.m.
“You can find fun and interesting vintage wear from all different eras. I’m drawn to ’30s and ’40s pieces myself. Sometimes we use Kathy’s for costumes for our shows.”
The Federal
6 p.m.
“It’s an old bank building that was turned into a fabulous restaurant and bar. Upstairs there’s a nightclub area. Their Dirty Chips with bacon, blue cheese, pico de gallo, and thick-cut potato chips are so good.”

7:30 p.m.
“Although I can’t name all the companies, there is a really large concentration of venues in a very small area offering everything from new works to the classics. I’m going to recommend you come to the Road Theatre, of course.”
Muddle & Twist
10:30 p.m.
“You can sit in a corner and have a private conversation, or grab a table with 12 people and have drinks and barbecue. They’ve just started doing Friday-night karaoke. It’s fun and a little rowdy.”
