For the Dior Spring 2019 collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri brought the natural movement, freedom and femininity embraced by contemporary dance pioneers like Pina Bausch, Martha Graham, Isadora Duncan and Loe Fuller to the runway through a range of billowy slips and silk dresses done up in a muted color palette. It was a warm-weather lineup that replaced Dior’s sharp, corseted silhouettes with free-flowing, tutu-esque midi skirts, netting, leotards and jersey pleated into neat neo-Grecian frocks.
Continuing on with this dance-inspired aesthetic, the French house’s Spring 2019 ad campaign contains a series of models — who could also pass as modern dancers — wearing various shades of nude. The images, shot by British photographer Harley Weir, are designed to reflect the lightness and modernity of Chiuri’s latest offering. “My work is related to the celebration of the body through clothing and the opportunity it offers us in how we represent ourselves in the eyes of others, as well as in our own eyes,” Chirui said in an official press statement.
There’s an alluring suppleness and delicacy to the way the women are posed and to the shadows they create. This is all thanks to Sharon Eyal — a former member of Batsheva Dance Company and the founder of her own dance collective — who choreographed a performance that was shown during the label’s catwalk presentation last September and who also worked with Dior to create the campaign imagery. Her movements are paired with key pieces from Dior’s spring collection, like mesh bodysuits and fluid dresses, which are then punctuated by brand icons and influencer favorites like the Saddle Bag.
