Beverly Hills has lost one of its newer restaurants today, as word has spread that Citizen on Canon Drive is no more. The two-year-old restaurant closed sometime around the new year, without making any sort of public announcement.
Citizen opened in the summer of 2016 with a splash, offering a lounge-y vibe that played to the monied Beverly Hills crowd and beyond. The plan was to be less of an upscale destination (and thus not to compete with Mastro’s, Wolfgang’s, and everyone else in the Golden Triangle) and more of a mellow dinner destination with a gas fire pit and lounge seating up front, looking out onto the street.
Despite expanding into lunch and seeing several other prominent Beverly Hills restaurants fall by the wayside, including Thomas Keller’s Bouchon and Geoffrey Zakarian’s Georgie, Citizen struggled to find a consistent audience. Yelp now lists them as closed, and folks associated with the place say they were told a week or so ago about the shutter.
That’s not to say that Beverly Hills is suffering for food. Fatamorgana Gelato is soon to open in the area, and famed Italian chef Massimo Bottura has been reportedly eyeballing spaces out that way. Add in clubby Greek spot Avra, and it’s clear that Beverly Hills still has a lot going on.
