49ers’ Tomlinson sustained potentially serious knee injury
LOS ANGELES — The 49ers’ iron man had his season end prematurely.
Left guard Laken Tomlinson, the team’s only player to log every offensive snap in the first 15 games, was carted off in the second quarter of a 48-32 loss to the Rams with a possible torn ACL in his right knee.
Tomlinson was making his 31st straight start.
“He’s been a very good player,” Shanahan said. “Hoping for good news on him. If not, I know he’ll do his rehab and be ready at some time next year. He’s a huge part of what we do.”
If Tomlinson has a torn ACL, he presumably wouldn’t be ready for the start of the 2019 regular season. On Sunday, he was replaced by Joshua Garnett, a 2016 first-round pick who has been plagued by injuries throughout his career.
Of the 49ers’ other four offensive-line starters, left tackle Joe Staley, right tackle Mike McGlinchey and center Weston Richburg will return next season. Right guard Mike Person is in the final year of his contract.
Schedule set: The 49ers’ final two opponents for the 2019 season were set based on the results of Sunday’s game.
The 49ers, who finished third in the NFC West, will visit Washington, which finished third in the NFC East. They will also host the Packers, who finished third in the NFC North.
The 49ers’ 2019 home opponents: Atlanta, Carolina, Cleveland, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Arizona, Rams.
The 49ers’ 2019 road opponents: New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Washington, Seattle, Arizona, Rams.
They’re No. 2: The 49ers will have the No. 2 selection in the 2019 draft, which would be the highest they’ve picked since they took quarterback Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in 2005.
They last used the No. 2 pick in 1965 when they selected running back Ken Willard.
The 49ers would have had the No. 1 pick in 2019 if Arizona (3-13) beat Seattle on Sunday. However, the Seahawks won, 27-24, on a 33-yard field goal as time expired.
Record breakers: The 49ers set two record they wish they didn’t possess: They had the fewest takeaways and fewest interceptions in a season.
The 49ers finished with seven takeaways, breaking the record of 11 held by four teams: the 2016 Bears, 2015 Cowboys, 2013 Texans and 1982 Colts. The Colts had 11 takeaways in a nine-game strike season.
Their two interceptions broke the record of four held by the 2008 Lions, who finished 0-16.
The 49ers’ turnover margin (minus-25) matched the 10th worst in NFL history.
Exum flagged: Strong safety Antone Exum drilled wide receiver Robert Woods in the midsection in the third quarter to break up a potential long pass and was flagged for a curious unnecessary roughness penalty.
“It’s just terrible,” cornerback Richard Sherman. “He did all he could. He played by the rules. He hit him in the strike zone. And he got penalized. At this point, you’ve got to let him catch it and don’t hit him hard. Or you’ve got to take guys knees out.”
