Four months after purchasing the site of the Sunset Strip’s famed Viper Room for $80-million, Silver Creek Development Co. is moving forward with plans to construct a new hotel on the property.
The project, which would rise at 8850-8878 Sunset Boulevard, calls for the construction of a 15-story building featuring 115 guest rooms, ground-floor commercial space, and various guest amenities. The proposed development would also incorporate 31 condominiums, 10 units of affordable housing, and parking for up to 300 vehicles.
Morphosis is designing the hotel tower, which would stand approximately 200 feet in height. A conceptual rendering of the project shows a modern design, highlighted by an immense chasm in the middle of the mid-rise structure.
According to Plus Development, which is representing property owner Silver Creek, Morphosis was selected as the result of a design competition that began with submissions from 12 architecture firms. Culver City-based Morphosis is best known locally for designing the Hollywood campus of Emerson College and the Caltrans District 7 headquarters.
The project is expected to be formally submitted to the City of West Hollywood shortly, after which point it will be considered by the West Hollywood Planning Commission’s Design Review Committee for feedback.
A timeline for the proposed development has not been announced.

Silver Creek’s project joins a number of similar developments featuring a mix of hotel rooms and condominiums that have recently come to the Sunset Strip. Construction is currently underway for the $240-million Pendry Hotel & Residences at the former site of the House of Blues nightclub, while the Edition Hotel & Residences wraps up work at Sunset and Doheny Drive.
