Back in January, Billie Eilish revealed plans for her debut studio album and introduced the project by sharing its lead single, "Bury a Friend." Now, the fast-rising superstar-in-the-making is back with another new single in support of WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, "wish you were gay." The aforementioned song was originally written "three years ago" according to Eilish, who also co-produced the track alongside FINNEAS.
"Baby, I don’t feel so good / Six words you never understood / I’ll never let you go / Five words you never say / I laugh alone like nothing’s wrong / Four days has never felt so long," Eilish croons. "If three’s a crowd and two was us / One slipped away / I just wanna make you feel okay / But all you do is look the other way / I can’t tell you how much I wish I didn’t wanna stay / I just kinda wish you were gay."
"I wrote this song about a guy that really was not interested in me and it made me feel horrible, so the song is called "wish you were gay,’" Billie Eilish shared in a clip posted to her Instagram in July of 2018, explaining the origins of today’s record and elaborating on its themes and her choice of title. "And that’s so not meant to be offensive in any way … it literally means I wish he was gay so that he didn’t like me for an actual reason, instead of the fact that he didn’t like me.”
