Last year, Beyoncé made history by fronting Vogue‘s September 2018 issue with images shot by 24 year-old Tyler Mitchell, who became the first-ever African-American to shoot a cover for the 126 year-old publication. The legendary portrait will now be entering the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
With editor-in-chief Anna Wintour appointing the musician to take creative control over the shoot, the issue became one of the most iconic moments in fashion history. She wrote captions for the imagery and also took part in appointing Mitchell as the photographer, who took to Instagram to share the news with excitement:
"A year ago today, we broke the flood gates open. Since then it was important to spend the whole year running through them making sure every piece of the gate was knocked down. And now, I’m glad to share this picture is being acquired into the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.”
