If you missed out on the Michael Kors show at New York Fashion Week, then I’m afraid you missed out big time – because Barry Manilow took to the stage and partied with the models and quite frankly, it doesn’t get better than that.
But let’s set the scene first. The general theme was Studio 54, so the Wall Street venue was dressed up for the occasion, herringbone floors, velvet curtains, disco balls and all.
The theme was heavily echoed in the collection, which was a celebration of glamour, romance and decadence. There were halterneck dresses with plunging necklines covered in sequins, gold lamé fringed minis and of course, plenty of velvet and feathers.
But that’s not to say there weren’t any more wearable pieces either, as demonstrated by masculine tailoring, fabulous shearling coats and denim boilersuits.
The show ended in spectacular fashion with Barry Manilow performing his 1978 hit ‘Copacabana during the models’ finale walk, which really did some up the AW19 collection.
Manilow’s performance underscored the show’s theme of dreaming and the New York that gave Michael Kors his start and continues to inspire him today. ‘Barry Manilow is a legend and Copacabana was one of the iconic songs of my youth,’ says Michael Kors.
