First introduced in 2015, Apple incorporated the butterfly keyboard design in its flagship line of MacBooks. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the brand is considering reverting back to its original scissor style model.
Apple recently debuted its 2019 MacBook Pro with its undesired technology applied to the model, which contains a silicone layer to provide better durability and reliability. The butterfly mechanism received controversial feedback from Mac users indicating its reliability issues and its low-travel design. Customers were forced to make appointments at the genius bar and request repairs regarding their stuck keys and disappearing characters.
A report published this week stated that Apple will be assembling an updated version of the scissor style keyboard which is said to feature better durability and longer key travel, launching in 2019 for the upcoming MacBook Air. As for its MacBook Pro, the laptop won’t be receiving this upgrade until 2020. Kuo says that the revamped model is expected to cost more than average due to it being incorporated with glass fiber, which reinforces the keys more.
Specific details about the redesign are yet to be released, so stay tuned for further announcements.
