In our new series How Did You Meet?, local couples tell us how they first hooked up.
Lisa and Khalil met as she was leaving the Melrose Flea Market 12 years ago. An avid dog lover, she and a friend couldn’t help but notice a group of men playing with an adorable bulldog puppy on Fairfax. “I went over there because of the dog and then we all started talking,” says the United Talent Agency executive.
Since Lisa had just moved to L.A. from San Francisco, Khalil (who at that time was the co-founder of a major streetwear brand on Fairfax) offered to show her around the city. They were great friends for two years and then something switched. “I decided to take her on a date but she didn’t realize it was a date,” says Khalil, who’s now general manager of the Kinsey Collection, one of the largest privately held collections of African American art and historical artifacts.
“I didn’t realize it was a date until we were sitting at dinner,” Lisa says with a big grin. Six months later, they cemented the relationship by adopting a dog together from Bark n’ Bitches on Melrose. They named him Orson.
