Wife & the Somm will open off Verdugo next year
Glassell Park is quickly becoming one of the hotter real estate markets on the Eastside, and that means lots of new restaurants and bars being added to the neighborhood’s roster. Next up is Wife & the Somm, a semi-hidden little spot on Verdugo Road, not far from the always-busy Lemon Poppy Kitchen and evening drinking stalwart Verdugo Bar.
The city’s Planning Department has released some new details on the project, as shown by local blog the Eastsider, including plans for 96 seats both inside and out on a sprawling patio. There will be some changes to the facade of the building and the outdoor area, naturally, but nothing quite as massive and daunting as the always-busy Salazar nearby in Frogtown, which was at one time an auto body repair shop.
Eater confirmed that new owners Chris Lucchese and Christine Lindgren have taken over the space along with a partner. This is the duo’s first restaurant, though they do have hospitality experience having run the catering outfit Home Somm for a couple of years now. As the name suggests, Lucchese and Lindgren worked together to throw home dinner parties complete with wine pairings, which is an attitude and approach they hope to take with their restaurant Wife & the Somm.
Reached by phone, the former film industry couple tells Eater that the plan is to open in the spring of next year, though there are plenty of hurdles to clear before then. The food will likely be a continuation of the Home Somm model, with playful casual American fare fit for the neighborhood, alongside wine pairings and a bottle list from Lucchese that will also change regularly.
At the start, Wife & the Somm will focus on traditional dinner hours from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with room for a Sunday brunch and weekly three-course Sunday supper as well. Meanwhile, others like Bub & Grandma’s and the folks from Permanent Records continue to pour into Glassell Park and Cypress Park with plans of their own.
