Netflix doesn’t look to be slowing down on its original content anytime soon. Today the streaming giant debuted the first trailer for its latest coming-of-age drama Beats which centers around a musical prodigy situated in Chicago.
Also touching upon gang violence and police brutality towards African Americans, the main character (played by Khalil Everage in his feature film debut), has to deal with the aftermath of his sister being shot and killed. Turning to music, the young teenager’s talent is soon discovered by the school’s security guard (played by Anthony Anderson) who takes him under his wings to help him sore.
The official synopsis shared by Netflix states:
"In this coming-of-age drama, a reclusive teenage musical prodigy (Khalil Everage) forms an unlikely friendship with a down-on-his-luck high school security guard (Anthony Anderson). United by their mutual love of hip hop, they try to free each other from the demons of their past and break into the city’s music scene. Directed by Chris Robinson (ATL, “The New Edition Story”), BEATS features Everage in his feature film debut and co-stars Uzo Aduba and Emayatzy Corinealdi. BEATS is the ultimate ode to Chicago’s South Side, and its long history of creating music that forms the city’s beating heart."
Starring Anthony Anderson, Uzo Aduba, Emayatzy Corinealdi and directed by Chris Robinson, look for Beats to land on Netflix June 19.
