A big piece of Star Wars memorabilia is set for auction over at Bonhams — a completely original Darth Vader costume. The costume was produced by John Mollo’s team at Elstree Studios in London in 1979 for The Empire Strikes Back, and then later worn by Kermit (Bryce) Eller for promotional purposes and red carpet events. Known for his large stature and impeccable James Earl Jones impersonation, Eller was the person for the job whenever Darth Vader was required for an official appearance.
The suit was eventually packed away in 1981, where it sat in two flight cases until today. In the sale, Bonhams is set to offer up Vader’s helmet, face mask, shoulder armor, vest, pants, chestbox, codpiece, and more. There is also a pair of knee-high riding boots with "Mr. Prowes" written on the inside – perhaps a typo for David "Prowse." Nonetheless, this complete and original Darth Vader costume is something that belongs in an film archive, and because of its provenance and condition, the estimated selling price has been set at a remarkable $1 million USD – $2 million USD.
Stay tuned as we’ll be updating you on how much this piece of Star Wars history will actually sell for at closing bid.
