5 Shoe Trends Celebs Over 30 Refuse to Wear—and Those They Choose Instead

Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Meghan Markle, Mary-Kate Olsen—what do they all have in common? Aside from topping our list of the chicest celebrities over 30, they’ve all honed in on a strong sense of personal style, and their consistent fashion choices are proof. Since celebs over a certain age have figured out their style better than most, it’s only natural that they would each have items they wear constantly—and ones that they tend to avoid wearing.

Curious about how they’ve come to define their own style, we did some research and found five of 2019’s major shoe trends this stylish group is passing on along with the shoe style each of them wears nonstop. Meghan Markle, for instance, always opts for more timeless and classic shoe styles that reflect the rest of her look rather than the most daring trendy styles of the moment. Priyanka’s style leans classic but she has a real sweet spot for It shoes from cool-girl brand By Far, especially their strappy sandals which she owns multiple pairs of. One sandal style we won’t see her wearing this summer (or anytime soon, really) are heeled thongs. Nope, she’ll leave those to celebs with more trend-focused wardrobes (ahem, Kendall Jenner).

The wardrobe of a royal like Meghan Markle is just as meticulously curated as you’d imagine, which puts plenty of shoe trends on the Duchess’ blacklist. Though tougher combat boots will soon be trending for fall, Markle will be passing on them in favor of sleeker style like the midcalf boots she donned while out in NYC last winter.

On Rihanna: Fenty Fuschia Drawstring Satin Mini Dress ($560) and Evening Sandals ($670); David Webb Grand Girandole Earrings ($585,000) and Aquamarine Stud Cuff ($145,000). No celeb’s wardrobe (or anyone’s for that matter) is complete without a pair of party heels. Rihanna, the queen of bold style herself, is putting her stamp of approval on the emerging metallic heel trend, which she designed for her Fenty line. Plenty of others will continue to wear PVC heels with their party dresses, but it’s only a matter of time until everyone else follows Rihanna’s lead.

On Ashley Graham: Adidas Courtset Sneakers. Clunky sneakers have been waning in popularity for a minute now, and looking at the outfits of our favorite over-30 celebs only confirms that the sneakers are on the way out. Ashley Graham may be onto something with her retro Adidas pick. The classic kicks will always be a thing, but now more than ever they’re coming into favor.

As far as flat shoe trends go, take a cue from everyone’s favorite style icon Mary-Kate Olsen, who’s been a fan of loafers for years now. Sure, mary-janes are starting to bubble up this year, but we’re positive that Mary-Kate (and Ashley, too) will be turning a blind eye.
