The Los Angeles City Council voted today to approve plans for a 21-story apartment tower on a parking lot at the eastern end of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, right next to the Fonda Theatre.
The development at 6100 Hollywood Boulevard would hold 220 residential units—5 percent would be affordable—as well as restaurant space and five levels of parking (two underground and three above).
The developer, 6104 Hollywood, LLC, is associated with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. It has said construction could get underway as soon as 2020.
The City Council approved the project, which would rise on Hollywood Boulevard at Gower, without discussion in a 10-0 vote. The council also denied three appeals against the project—including one filed by the owners of the property where the Fonda Theatre sits.
In their appeal, the Fonda owners said they only opposed the project as a way to ensure that they would be allowed to retain use of an alley that runs through the block for trucks and tour buses.
A representative for 6104 Hollywood, Dale Goldsmith, told the Los Angeles planning commission in May that the developer and the theater owners had agreed to “material terms” that would allow the Fonda to maintain use of the alley, but details were still being hammered out.
Other appeals were filed by the Supporters Alliance for Environmental Responsibility and the Citizens for a Better LA. Both groups argued that the project’s environmental impact report insufficiently assessed traffic impacts and other potential effects on the neighborhood.
The blocks surrounding the site are also slated for development, most notably the huge Hollywood Center project, which would bring 1,005 apartments and condos (including 133 units set aside for low-income seniors) and two towers over 35 stories tall to Vine Street, just north of Hollywood Boulevard.
