12 Seasonal Hair, Makeup, and Skincare Products We’re Swapping in for Spring

Our beauty product needs naturally change from season to season—and especially once winter ends and spring begins. The weather plays a huge part in our skin, hair, and makeup needs (think: rain, humidity, sun, and the like). So, we’ve begun to think about the products we’ll be retiring now that spring has begun and winter is a distant memory (can we all let out a collective sigh of relief?). For the most part, we use thicker moisturizers in during the cold weather, due to the dryness in the hair, and the same goes for haircare as well. Everything is a bit more nourishing, protective, and hydrating. Then, once spring rolls around, we need lighter options that keep sweat and sun damage in mind. And, with makeup, it’s always a time when we start to feel more in the mood for brights, pinks, and natural-looking options.

With that in mind, I asked the other editors at Byrdie HQ to sound off on the products they’re coveting for spring. It’s a mixture of good things—balms, gels, dry shampoos, vitamin C serums, and many other gems you’re going to want to try. There are new launches, a few old favorites, and reasons for why we’re loving each one. Below, find twelve of the hair, makeup, and skincare products we’re swapping in for spring.

"The first thing on my agenda when it comes to seasonal skincare is finding the right moisturizer for the changing weather. While I usually go for a thicker texture during the colder months, I need something a bit lighter come spring. So, I’ve been trying every last water cream I can get my hands on. It’s the perfect texture—light, airy, but still deeply hydrating and cushiony on my skin. I’m a huge fan of Tatcha’s Water Cream ($68) Peter Thomas Roth’s Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream ($52), and Sunday Riley’s Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream ($65) for that reason. But, it wasn’t until I came across Care Skincare, a new clean skincare brand launched by a former Estée Lauder exec, where I found the perfect offering. I am addicted to this stuff. It’s brimming with hyaluronic acid, aloe, vitamins C and E, as well as caffeine to deeply hydrate, brighten, protect, nourish, and firm your skin. The genius is in the texture—a gel-cream hybrid that feels like a burst of cooling hydration upon application. I started using it at my desk, and then promptly took it home to use on the daily."

"All I ever want on my lips come spring is something hydrating, tinted, and completely low maintenance. I’ve been a long-time stan of Dior’s Lip Glow ($34) and Chapstick’s Total Hydration Tinted Lip Oil ($7) over the years, but this season, wanted something brand new. Since, I’ve always been attracted to Nars’ Orgasm products, from the original blush years ago to the most recent launches like Afterglow Lip Balm ($28) and The Multiple ($39), their newest launch felt like just the thing. The peach-pink color and subtle shimmer gives you a natural flush, and, it’s especially flattering because it blends warm and cool tones—the mix of peach, pink, and gold are balanced with all skin tones in mind. The oil-infused hydrating balm offers a subtle hint of that famous Orgasm color, a radiant finish (glowy, not glossy), and a blend of monoï oil and antioxidants for long-lasting hydration and daily protection. It’s the easiest thing to apply, just swipe it on and go, but it still offers a look that’s both put together and eye-catching in equal measure."

"I have been a fan of Olaplex products ever since my go-to colorist and Redken ambassador, Matt Rez, introduced me to its hair strengthening abilities years ago. Now, the brand has launched its newest product (and first-ever leave-in), just in time for spring. It’s perfect for warmer weather situations because it’s the perfect thing for an easy air-dry. The reparative styling cream offers tons of hydration, protection, and works wonders on the health of colored and chemically-treated hair (mine). I apply it post-shower, scrunch up my curls, and let it air dry."

"Now that weather is getting (slightly) less frigid, I’ve been going hard on acids—it’s time to get my skin out of hibernation mode. I’m not happy with the winter dullness thing I have going on right now, so I’ve been swapping out my super-gentle hydrating serums and masks forbrightening products. Currently, I’ve been testing Skinceuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight ($80) and Zelens Melatonin Serum ($218)—I’ve noticed a huge difference with both already, even after just using them a few times. I’m also trading my heavier winter moisturizers and face oils for lighter (but still hydrating) options: I brought my beloved Sisley Paris’ Black Rose Skin Infusion Cream ($195) back into my rotation recently, and my skin has been loving it. I’ve also been really loving this Korean beauty moisturizer called Madecera Cream ($36)—it comes in a cute pink tube and leaves my skin looking soft and velvety in the morning before foundation."

"Winter for me was all about major glow, which meant my highlighter collection expanded exponentially. Now that the hint of spring is around the corner, I’ve been trading my glow obsession for a focus on the eyes—namely, swiping anything holographic, shimmery and colorful on my lids with abandon. I’ve been using Bodyography’s eye glitters even during the daytime—they come in so many fun shades and all of them leave a wet-like glimmer on your eyelids. I’m such a black eyeliner girl, but there’s something about a pop of shimmer on the eyelids that instantly puts me in a better mood (plus, it takes way less time then a perfect cat-eye). Other fun eye products I’ve been dabbling in: Glossier’s Glitter Gelée in Glass Bonsai ($14), the holographic shade in Pat McGrath’s Mothership Palette (my friend Hannah, the beauty editor at the Coveteur, was wearing this the other day and I immediately asked what was on her eyelids), Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Riviera Palette (the blue shade is so easy to swipe on and instantly turns up your look), and the new Marc Jacob Fineliner ($25) shades because what screams spring more than graphic baby-blue eyeliner?"

"I recently had a traumatizing experience where a giant clump of my hair came out in my hand in the shower (#platinumproblems) so I’ve been trying to be as low-key as I possibly can with my haircare routine. I try to only wash my hair once a week (thanks to dry shampoo and Philip Kingsley’s ), and load it up with hydrating oils and creams in the days in between. Oribe’s Supershine Moisturizing Cream ($20) is my daily go-to, along with Bumble and bumble’s Invisible Hairdresser’s Oil ($40). Now that it’s spring and I’ve gotten more used to having platinum hair, I’ve been experimenting with strengthening protein treatments, like Nexxus’ Keraphix Line and Virtue’s products, which are made with human keratin.

"I have quite a few pesky dark spots left over from breakouts at the moment, as well as sun damage from a recent trip to Miami, so I’m turning to vitamin C serums to hit the refresh button on my skin. This new serum from Amazon’s first proprietary skincare line, Belei, has already made a noticeable different in my skin’s clarity and feels silky and hydrating on contact."

"I love a tinted lip balm, mostly because there’s rarely a time I don’t need a layer of moisturizer before swiping on a lipstick, so I’m killing two birds with one stone. And spring is the perfect time to swap out my usual creamy lipsticks for something a little more lightweight that requires less precision. Kosas’ new Kosasport Lip Fuels are a line of hyaluronic acid lip balms with just the right amount of color to hydrate your lips and warm up your overall complexion. They’re also super slim, so you can slip them into any purse (or pocket)."

"I’m all about air-dried hair when the temperature warms up and it’s no longer so cold that my hair turns into a giant icicle. The problem, though, is that my hair is quite thin and dry, so I need a leave-in, wave-inducing product that’s going to hydrate without weighing my strands down. Salt sprays tend to make my hair a little too rough, so I was thrilled to learn that Kerastase has a sugar spray that not only encourages waves, but hydrates in the process. I can’t wait to spritz my freshly-showered hair with it in the morning when I’m inevitably running short on time, throw it in a braid, and put my curling iron on hiatus."

"I’m swapping out my heavy Skinceuticals’ Triple Lipid Restore ($128) for Renee Rouleau’s Skin Recovery Lotion ($44). The former was great for my skin during winter—it soothed the dry, flakiness that’s inevitable for me during the colder months. But come spring, I’m looking forward to using this formula, as it’s just as soothing and safe for my sensitive skin, but a little bit lighter."

"I’m swapping my tried-and-true Glossier Boy Brow for W3ll People’s Expressionist Brow Gel ($18). One of my goals for this year was to find natural versions of my favorite makeup products, so I’m going to give this version a shot come spring. It’s made with entirely all-natural ingredients, and it’s petroleum-free (which is an ingredient found in a lot of other brow gels). The compact size is similar to what I’m used to and the brush is great for defining and directing every last brow hair into place."

"My hair is pretty dry all year round, but especially when it’s cold out—for winter, I swear by Phyto’s 7 Hydrating Day Cream ($29). I’m swapping that out for Moroccanoil’s Dry Shampoo Dark Tones ($26), which keeps my roots from looking greasy and flat come spring. The best part? It’s tinted for darker hair colors, so you don’t have to stress about those annoying white spots. It works to volumize, mop up grease, and disappears upon contact."

FYI: You can actually train your skin to be less oily.
