Update: Verizon told Business Insider that the issue has been resolved and internet service is returning to normal.
Verizon FiOS customers in the Northeast and central United States are reporting issues with their internet service on social media.
A map from the downdetector.com website shows much of the northeastern US is without Verizon FiOS internet service.
The outages started occurring as far back as around 7 a.m. EST, as shown by a FiOS customer from Philadelphia.
Information on Verizon support sites say that the company is "working hard to restore service to our customers affected by the recent storms," but doesn’t provide a date for the outage or storms the page is referring to. There were no recent major storms in the New York City area.
Verizon earlier confirmed that its FiOS internet service was experiencing issues.
