BMW’s first mid-engine sports car, the M1, was a feat in joining together German engineering alongside Italian design. Initially designed for motorsport, the vehicle was built for competition, maintaining a futuristically-tinged tube-frame chassis and lightweight fiberglass body designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro — famous for his designs at nearly every major automobile manufacturer. Toting a 3.5 liter inline six, the car effectively had 273 brake horsepower and topped out at 162 MPH, and was initially slated for competition in the FIA Group 4 racing circuit.
