Brandon’s has mid-century modern decor, vinyl records supplying the tunes, and a menu of classic cocktails served in vintage-style glassware. In other words, it’s exactly the kind of place where we would expect to see a Midge Maisel type at the table next to us working on some new jokes. But if you want to slip into this dimly lit retro drinking den, you’ll need to know where to find it–and when.
The bar operates out of a back room inside the 6th & La Brea brewpub on Friday and Saturday nights (from 8 p.m. to midnight only, so reservations are recommended). The atmosphere is designed to be dramatically different from the light and bright main bar, with dark walls, psychedelic stained glass windows, and other old fashioned touches.
Angela Ryskiewicz, former bar manager at the Ace Hotel, is the force behind the drinks menu. In addition to renditions of the classics, her original creations include the Licorice Tattoo (Gonzalez Byass fino sherry, Tio Pepe PX sherry, Jardesca red vermouth, absinthe, grapefruit bitters, and dehydrated orange) and One-Eyed King (chai-infused Real McCoy 5 Year rum, Rittenhouse rye, demerara sugar, cardamom bitters, and lemon zest).
Beer drinkers won’t be left out. Being tucked inside a brewery, guests have access to the same made-on-site offerings as the main bar. A brief food menu of light bar snacks will be served in Brandon’s as well.
Brandon’s at 6th & La Brea, 600 S. La Brea Ave., Mid-City. Open Friday and Saturday only, from 8 p.m. to midnight.
