August is here and we’re still making the most of summer. This weekend we’re checking out a horror con in Long Beach, a Queercore band at the Regent, and more.
The Big Lebowski
August 2
The Silver Lake Picture Show free outdoor screening series in Sunset Triangle Plaza rolls on (literally) with L.A.’s favorite movie about bowling, nihilists, and beaver pictures. BYO chair and grab a spot early for pre-show music and a short film screening.
O’Neill Warehouse Sale
August 2, 3 & 4
Surf and outdoor brand O’Neill will be clearing out clothes, accessories, and more for men, women, and kids at this warehouse sale in Santa Ana. Expect deep discounts, limited edition items, and an array of sizes and fabrics.
Bearded Villains Beard Competition
August 3
People flaunt their facial hair for a chance of winning prizes in categories including full beard, business beard, and ladies whiskerina. A good reason to ditch the razor? All proceeds go to Children’s Hospital L.A., Las Fotos Project, and the Dawgs Project.
Midsummer Scream
August 3 & 4
Catch Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira), Bill Moseley (aka Otis Firefly from House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects), John Kassir (aka voice of the Crypt Keeper), and other horror luminaries at this creepy con in Long Beach. Also check out live podcast tapings, a horror fashion show, and a tribute to 30 years of Tales from the Crypt.
Limp Wrist: 20 Years of Total Joteria!
August 3
“We put the ‘core’ back in ‘Queercore,” Limp Wrist once declared. The punk band has been doing exactly, unapologetically that for two decades–and they’re celebrating that radically inclusive legacy with this special show at the Regent.
Bullocks Wilshire Open House
August 4
Built in 1929 and designated a landmark in 1969, the old Bullocks department store is an art deco gem on Wilshire Boulevard. Treat yourself to a self-guided tour of the space (now home to Southwestern Law School) on Sunday for 25 bucks.
