The latest news helps position Qualcomm as a key driver of widespread global 5G adoption; here’s how:
- It’s opening the door to a new ecosystem of premium mobile VR and AR headsets that rely on 5G networks. Qualcomm is pushing for a new category of 5G-enabled VR and AR headsets, XR viewers, that combine the best features of both tethered and mobile headsets. XR viewers will connect to smartphones by leveraging the company’s Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform via USB Type-C. Qualcomm announced a handful of global network service providers that are supporting the initiative, including Sprint, Telstra, SK Telecom, and others.
- Qualcomm’s facilitating the shift to 5G-powered Always On, Always Connected PCs. It revealed that the new Snapdragon 8cx 5G Compute Platform can be paired with the newly announced X55 5G modem to support 5G networks in addition to legacy 4G LTE, 3G, and 2G networks. Lenovo is prepared to be the first to offer a 5G PC, powered by the Snapdragon 8cx 5G platform, in early 2020.
- It’s unleashing the power of the connected car with the first 5G dual SIM dual active (DSDA) 5G platform for the auto industry. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Automotive 5G platform can support cellular vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, enabling cars to interact with each other and surrounding infrastructure, respectively. It also boasts support for DSDA, allowing both the car and driver to each pick their own independent network operator subscription. Qualcomm will make sample chipsets available to customers later this week and says it’ll make its way into car production starting in 2021.
- Qualcomm’s offering a peek at its industry-first mobile platform with integrated 5G. Qualcomm is gearing up to release a new Snapdragon Mobile Platform with a 5G chip built in, and expects it to be ready for commercial devices in the first half of 2020. The integrated solution is designed to spearhead global adoption of 5G mobile devices, following the first wave of flagship 5G devices that we expect to see lackluster uptake, by making it seamless and cost-efficient for mobile device makers to create 5G smartphones for any 5G network and region.
