FC Barcelona asked its fans to help choose the best goal scored in the club’s 119-year history and Lionel Messi came first, second, and third.

Messi is a divinely-skilled forward who spreads his wings to glide past opposition defenders with gravity-defying manoeuvres, before duping a goalkeeper and scoring heavenly goals.

But Barça has a history of recruiting and nurturing goalscorers with exceptional quality, and that Messi dominated a pool of players that included Ronaldinho, Diego Maradona, and Johan Cruyff only emphasizes his extraordinary skill set and unrivalled popularity.

More than 500,000 votes were cast in the pool and supporters were able to choose from a collection of 63 goals, according to the BBC.

Three Messi goals, in particular, attracted an astonishing 89% share of the vote. Here they are:

3: Messi’s 2010-11 goal against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu received 16% of votes cast

2: The Argentine’s stunner against Athletic Bilbao in the 2014-2015 Copa del Rey final secured 28% of the vote

1: And his immortal goal against Getafe in the 2006-2007 Copa del Rey semi-finals attracted 45% of the vote

As Messi is still only 31 years old and is enjoying an incredible season, where he is ranked the top performer in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League according to Whoscored.com data, he will only continue to entertain with his outrageous ball play.

Something tells us he may even score more goals that better Barça’s best.
