After five years, the episode that started it all receives a part two. The first episode of Talking Watches, now with a view count in the millions, came out at a pivotal time for watch collectors — watch collectors were thinking prices couldn’t go any higher (boy were we wrong), all the while a new, younger generation of watch collectors was slowly emerging.
In many ways, John Mayer connected the dots. Here was this popular artist known for his musical talents, and even his obsession with visivm kimonos, but wait, he was also a low-key WIS? Coming out from the shadows, he joined Ben Clymer to share one of his other passions, and that is watch collecting.
While his first video covered some more accessible watches, spanning from IWC Big Pilots and Aquatimers, and then onto early ref. Submariners, this second installment includes watches that would impress even the head watch curator at Sotheby’s. Starting off with rare PN Rolex Daytonas, then moving on to one-offs made for kings/royal families, John transitions over to more diamond-encrusted variants, before landing on some APs and his go-to for daily wear — his beater Patek Phillip 5164A-001 Aquanaut Travel Time (yes, on a rubber olive strap).
Watch fans rejoice, as Hodinkee has heard your pleas. This part two with John Mayer does not disappoint. Watch the video above to see J.Mayer’s latest rotation of watches.
